A practical start for
digital safeguarding.

Curriculum, staff guidance, family communication, and technology decisions all affect digital safeguarding. Start by identifying which part needs attention in your school.

Learning about AI is not the same as giving children access to AI.

These activities use fictional scenarios and adult-facilitated discussion. They do not ask children to use live AI companions, disclose personal experiences, or bypass age restrictions, school policies or local law. Safeguarding concerns follow the school’s own reporting and escalation procedures.

Discuss and teach

AI literacy without live interaction

Use fictional scripts, screen-free examples and adult-led discussion to build language for noticing design, checking information and seeking help.

Supervised decision

Permitted classroom use

Where local policy allows it, agree purpose, age, privacy, adult supervision, opt-out and a clear handback to the teacher.

Separate safeguarding decision

Independent or companion access

Personal use, emotional reliance and age-restricted services require a different risk and responsibility conversation. Do not normalise access because a lesson discussed AI.

Begin here / 10–15 minutes

Start with a whole-school review

Use the six-domain diagnostic to spot an area for follow-up. Agree who will take the first action and who needs to be involved.

02

Notice → Listen → Record → Refer

Follow your school’s reporting process.

Listen without investigating, record through your school procedure, and refer to the designated safeguarding lead. Do not submit identifiable children, casework or live incident reports through this personal website.

03

Turn the conversation into action

Plan the next check-in.

Record an action, role owner, risk, indicator and review date. Use the 30-day plan to get started, then review progress with colleagues during the term.

Bring colleagues together

Digital awareness and safeguarding

A 45–60 minute facilitated workshop on online misogyny, ambiguous digital signals, student disclosures, and AI companions. Review local procedures before use.
